Fans Brave Cold to Support Bobsled World Cup
The U.S. four-man bobsled team placed sixth of 26 teams Saturday afternoon as an impressive number of fans gathered at the Utah Olympic Park for the last day of World Cup competition. Despite temperatures in the 10s and a biting wind, Park Citizens lined the track to cheer on the final event of the FIBT’s season debut. World Cup competition will continue this Friday in Lake Placid.

Weeks after rejoining the U.S. Ski Team in time to make the 2010 Vancouver Olympic season, a mellowed Bode Miller confirmed in his online diary for Universal Sports that, at least for the public’s sake, his commitment to racing is real.
“I had my 32nd birthday yesterday,” he wrote from training camp in Saas Free, Switzerland on October 13. “I didn’t do much to celebrate because it was a Monday and there wasn’t much going on. Plus, I’m pretty focused on my training right now so I’m not doing much partying.”
Known for his rebellious spirit and independent nature (he left the USSA after his 2006 Olympic debacle), Miller also noted a renewed sense of camaraderie. “I’m just enjoying being back with the team and hanging out with all the guys,” he wrote. “We play all day.”
Miller, who will not compete in the World Cup opener this Saturday in Austria, hopes to make the lineup by the Levi, Finland race.
Leave a commentChris Wadell Becomes First Athlete to Summit Mount Kilimanjaro Without Use of His Legs
Super-athlete and former Paralympic ski racer Chris Wadell made history this afternoon, becoming the first ever paraplegic to summit the treacherous Mount Kilimanjaro as he arrived, right on schedule, at the top of Africa’s highest peak, a towering 19,340 feet.
The innovative athlete began the trek on September 24, climbing with a specially designed cart called the “Bomba,” which allowed him to traverse steep terrain using his arms. His team, One Revolution, accompanied him while documenting progress on his blog. Today, they declared victory:
“This just in… The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro was successful! This is wonderful news and we are so very excited.”

Leave a commentU.S. Ski Team Embraces Return of Bode Miller
Just in time for the 2010 Olympic Games, Bode Miller announced today that he will rejoin the U.S. Ski Team. Speaking at a press conference in Southern California, Miller’s comments shot across global media almost instantly. After two years of solo success, including an overall World Cup win in 2008, the controversial Alpine racer will look to qualify for a spot on the Olympic team before the roster is announced on Jan. 26. Miller said he took a hiatus from the U.S. Team to contemplate his future in the sport after an embarrassing performance at the 2006 Games in Turin, where stories of his heavy partying preluded woeful races. Since his quasi-retirement, the nearly 32-year-old Miller has gained a newfound commitment to ski racing.
“You can see how it would be nice to walk away and try something new, then you walk away and there’s obviously a big hole left,” he said at the press conference. “I still had more to give.”
Just don’t expect him to apologize. MIller says he’d rather let his skis speak for him.
“Right now, I don’t feel like this is an arena for me to apologize,” he said. “My actions will speak more loudly than any apologies could. From here forward, I’m moving in a very positive direction.”
Hopefully for him, that direction will lead to Vancouver.

Telemark Skier Magazine Editor Josh Madsen, a Park City telemarking phenom known for his filmmaking prowess and dedication to Park City’s youth Tele Tribe, has teamed with Height Of Land Publications on the 50-date Telemark Skier Magazine U.S. tour, hitting key ski towns and metropolitan areas across the country for screenings of Madsen’s new Telemark movie, “The Freeheel Life.”
HOL publisher Jon Howard expressed excitement at Madsen’s involvement. “This is a great opportunity to show our commitment to Telemark skiing and help grow the sport,” he said. “And Madsen is the man to spread the gospel.”
Josh Madsen is no new comer to the Telemark scene, having built an impressive resume as an athlete, filmmaker and youth program organizer over the past eight years. His own athletic talent is showcased in Warren Miller’s “Higher Ground” and several Telemark movies, including releases by Powderwhores and his own previous company, Lipstick Films.
“The Freeheel Life” creates a visual montage of shots ranging from the first descents of Austrian couloirs by World Tele Champion, Dylan Crossman, to the two-lane roads of New England. The movie features athletes, skiing styles, and music sure to strike a familiar chord with freeheel skiers from around the world. It visually represents the full spectrum of everything from jumping to steep descents, and plenty of overhead powder!
Josh will bring the gospel to Park City on October 7, screening The Freeheel Life at The Star Bar as part of a fundraiser for the youth Tele Tribe. In the meantime, check out real time tour updates via twitter (@freeheellife) and on his weekly blog, www.thefreeheellife.blogspot.com.

U.S. Soccer Team Spends A Not-So-Secret Week in Park City
Before the U.S. Soccer team edged closer to a World Cup entry with a win at Rio Tinto Stadium this month, the team spent a not-so-subtle week in Park City, training at Quinn’s Junction, hanging out on Main Street and dining at popular restaurants.
Although officials kept practices under wraps after kids disrupted Everton of the English Premiere League before the MLS All-Star match earlier this month, the U.S. team made no attempts to disguise themselves in town. One assistant coach paraded U.S. Soccer attire head-to-toe during a bike ride up Main Street, stopping to talk to passersby on his way. The entire team later arrived conspicuosly at Silver Mountain Sports Club, apparently having solved money issues with the gym that might have sent the boys elsewhere. (SMSC reportedly started negotiations with regular price.)
Adolph’s Restaurant enjoyed a stop by Coach Bob Bradley with his star midfielder son Michael, while Fuego in Prospector saw much of the whole team. The squad stayed at the Marriott Mountainside.
