Jeret “Speedy” Peterson: Celebration of Life Held Oct. 22

Friends of Jeret “Speedy” Peterson are seeking smiles and laughter on Saturday, Oct. 22 as they celebrate his life in an open memorial at City Park.

Known to the world as a fearless Olympic aerial skier whose refusal to play it safe — ever — led him to a silver medal in 2010 at Vancouver, Speedy’s magnetic personality and passion for everything he did is what friends and competitors across the world will remember most. Even his competition rallying cry lives on after young aerial skiers, enamored by their idol, began their own versions of his rally during the Vancouver Games.

Park City will remember Speedy for his genuine warmth and a sincerity that overshadowed his Olympic resume. His immediate concern for others left a lasting impression, making his loss one felt by everyone he met.

The celebration of Speedy’s life will begin at 2 p.m. with more than 300 people expected to attend. This memorial is open to all who wish to express their love and support for Speedy, his friends and family.

The Rise of Beer: What the St. Regis and Alexander Wang Have in Common

Who says beer isn’t the brew of luxury?

The epicurean St. Regis Deer Valley is turning a cold, frothy shoulder to old brew faux pas by opening their five-star J&G Grill to an alpine tradition that combines the best of fine dining with perfectly paired beer. (Yes, beer — from a keg.) A new season of Oktoberfest at St. Regis starts Friday with a “ceremonial tapping of the keg” and live music until 9 p.m. The popular event continues on Saturdays through October with four-course Beer Dinners and new musical artists each week.

Beer: Not just for lederhosen

Beer: Not just for lederhosen

The carbonated brewhaha follows Alexander Wang’s New York Fashion Week frat party in the rise of luxe beer-themed parties. Wang’s wildly popular event, one of the most widely reported of Fashion Week, gleefully shocked the world of haute couture with 40s of beer, keg stands and shotgunning contests.

Beer empires have done their own part to elevate to the status of fine brews as commercials like Heineken’s “Golden Age” and Dos Equis’ most interesting man in the world shift the perception of beer from babes on beaches to gals in evening dresses and guys in skinny ties.

This weekend, raise a glass of foamy Hefeweisen in Deer Valley to the rise of beer.

The Crystal Method Pulls Out Hidden Talents at Sundance 2011

3Four Group's Dustin Eason with Scott Kirkwood of The Crystal Method

3Four Group's Dustin Eason with Scott Kirkwood of The Crystal Method at The Yard, Jan. 23

Electronic DJ veterans Scott Kirkwood and Ken Jordan of The Crystal Method proved their unstoppable talent nearly two decades ago — but their response to a technical problem during a Sundance show at The Yard on Sunday night revealed an unflappable side to the energetic entertainers that turned an unexpected development into one of the night’s greatest highlights.  As the club briefly lost sound, Kirkwood (a Ricky Gervais look-alike as is) took the mike for a five-minute impromptu comedy set, entertaining the audience with spontaneous humor while technicians quickly fixed the amplifier. When the music returned, The Crystal Method took the set until nearly 3 a.m., satisfying the packed crowd of beat enthusiasts until the dance floor finally thinned.

As part of a the 3D 3opolis concert series presented by 50.com, 3Four Group, 3opolis and The Exquisite Group, The Crystal Method set followed an equally packed performance by Far East on Saturday night filled with large-screen effects and high-profile guests.

Cena Sizzles Italian-Style in Opening Night Soiree

Cena may offer $650 bottles of wine, but a full page is under $50

More than 100 guests enjoyed sampling wines from Cena's extensive list

Cena Ristaurant and Lounge showed off Deer Valley’s ”casual” side on Thursday night as only America’s no. 1 ski resort could — with valet service, coat check, a costumed Italian trio, champagne and a friendly welcome line of Deer Valley staff.

The soft opening of The Chateaux at Silver Lake’s newest culinary hot spot thrived on Italian (and Deer Valley) generosity, delighting an intimate crowd of Park City socialites with a festive spread likely to leave many guests’ Thanksgivings in an anti-climax.

Locally made sausages, artisan cheeses, gourmet pizzas, fig with ricotta and homemade tiramassou marked the hightlights of a feast fit for a wildly expensive restaurant, belying Cena’s family-friendly atmosphere and even friendlier price point. A peek at the wine list revealed a full page of bottles under $50, while appetizers and salads started at $7. (Of course, for those hoping to enjoy a fine Italian vino in the $650 range, Cena delivers.)

Notable attendees of among the 100 or so guests included City Weekly food editor Ted Scheppler, Valerie Deming of The Park Record and Amy Kersey of the Park City Chamber Bureau. Deer Valley’s Colleen Reardon also made an appearance, along with Whitney Thompson of advertising agency C&S Creative.

Cena will open for the 2010-2011 season with apres ski and dinner options. A children’s menu is available. For reservations or questions, call 435-658-5900.

Sullenburger kept his celebrity status alive in Park City this week while dining at Adolph’s Swiss restaurant, posing with owner Adolph Imboden for a photo to add to the chef’s coveted celebrity wall. SKI Dream Home to Host Women’s Ski Jumping Benefit

SKI magazine's dream home will be open to the generous on July 14 for "Join the Journey"

The SKI Dream Home will be open to the generous on July 14 for "Join the Journey," a gala to support the U.S. Women's Ski Jumping Team

The tightly guarded SKI magazine Dream Home has remained a mystery to many since its completion in 2007. Designed to be the ultimate skier’s paradise, the $19 million Deer Crest mansion fetches thousands a night in rental fees — that is, when potential guests are approved.

The 14,000 square-foot luxury chalet will be open to the generous, however, at an exclusive benefit for the U.S. Women’s Ski Jumping Team on July 14. The gala will raise money for the team’s fight against sexist rejection from Olympic competition. Despite boasting women who can jump as far as internationally-ranked men (Lindsay Van’s best jump on Vancouver’s 90-meter hill would have earned her a bronze medal in the men’s competition), the U.S. team and their global counterparts have failed to gain recognition from the International Olympic Committee.

Without the weight of the Olympics behind them, America’s team has lost support from the USSA, forcing the athletes to fund their own coaching, travel and equipment. The July fundraiser, “Join the Journey,” will raise much-needed funds to fuel their next season of international competition.

Olympians Shannon Bahrke and Emily Cook are confirmed to attend the gala, as well as famed Paralympian Chis Waddell. Attendees will enjoy an evening of luxury, with all the comforts of the Dream Home, international cuisine and a live auction. For tickets, visit the U.S. Women’s Ski Jumping team’s official page.

Debbie Lockhart wants you (among others ) to know that, contrary to first impressions, she is not Carla from Cheers. Lockhart will perform this Friday and Saturday night at The Egyptian with comedic producer, Tim Chizmar. For tickets, visit www.parkcityshows.com.
