Celebrity Pilot of Hudson River Crash Spotted in Park City

U.S. Airways pilot Chelsey Sullenburger earned his 15 minutes of fame on January 15, 2009 when the 57-year-old former fighter pilot safely landed a mechanically troubled commercial jet in the Hudson River. The casualty-free crash landing earned Sullenburger celebrity status on the bloggosphere, giving him the no. 2 spot on TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009.

Sullenburger kept his celebrity status alive in Park City this week while dining at Adolph’s Swiss restaurant, posing with owner Adolph Imboden for a photo to add to the chef’s coveted celebrity wall. Sullenburger will join Dustin Hoffman, Summer Saunders, Bode Miller and Parnelli Jones in the eclectic range of actors, skiers, TV personalities and race car drivers who have dined at Adolph’s restaurant.

Sullenburger still flies for U.S. Airways.

SKI Dream Home to Host Women’s Ski Jumping Benefit

SKI magazine's dream home will be open to the generous on July 14 for "Join the Journey"

The SKI Dream Home will be open to the generous on July 14 for "Join the Journey," a gala to support the U.S. Women's Ski Jumping Team

The tightly guarded SKI magazine Dream Home has remained a mystery to many since its completion in 2007. Designed to be the ultimate skier’s paradise, the $19 million Deer Crest mansion fetches thousands a night in rental fees — that is, when potential guests are approved.

The 14,000 square-foot luxury chalet will be open to the generous, however, at an exclusive benefit for the U.S. Women’s Ski Jumping Team on July 14. The gala will raise money for the team’s fight against sexist rejection from Olympic competition. Despite boasting women who can jump as far as internationally-ranked men (Lindsay Van’s best jump on Vancouver’s 90-meter hill would have earned her a bronze medal in the men’s competition), the U.S. team and their global counterparts have failed to gain recognition from the International Olympic Committee.

Without the weight of the Olympics behind them, America’s team has lost support from the USSA, forcing the athletes to fund their own coaching, travel and equipment. The July fundraiser, “Join the Journey,” will raise much-needed funds to fuel their next season of international competition.

Olympians Shannon Bahrke and Emily Cook are confirmed to attend the gala, as well as famed Paralympian Chis Waddell. Attendees will enjoy an evening of luxury, with all the comforts of the Dream Home, international cuisine and a live auction. For tickets, visit the U.S. Women’s Ski Jumping team’s official page.

Debbie Lockhart wants you (among others ) to know that, contrary to first impressions, she is not Carla from Cheers. “Wild Utah” Icon’s Singing Pooch Readies for TODAY Show

Park City icon Tommy Kirchoff first achieved fame as founder of alternative newspaper Wild Utah, but the charismatic writer may have reached a new level of fortune with his Doberman pincher, Reuben “Fluffy” Von Fluffmeister.

Kirchoff, who now lives in Salt Lake with his wife Melissa, drew uncontrolled laughter from MSNBC broadcasters this week when he submitted Fluffy’s audition tape for the TODAY Show’s national “Top Dog” contest.

If Fluffy wins, he will take his tenor vocals to New York for the Top Dog finals. Meanwhile, he has already caught the eye of local mash artists with the “Fluffy” dance remix already appearing on YouTube. Vote for Fluffy before Thursday, April 29 HERE.

Park City’s Summer Sanders Dishes on Celebrity Apprentice and “Polly Perfect” Persona

Olympic gold medalist and sports broadcaster Summer Sanders is no stranger to competition — or TV cameras. But the former swimming star’s stint on Celebrity Apprentice has brought unexpected challenges for the Park City resident and mother of two. Sanders, who is married to Olympic skier Erick Schlopy, hesitated to join a reality show, but bit the bullet and “went back to high school” to raise money for her charity, Right to Play. Right to Play uses the power of sport to improve the lives of kids in third world countries. Sanders has been involved with the organization for 15 years. See what she has to say about the other contestants and the highlight of her life. Here’s a hint: winning four medals at the Barcelona Olympics isn’t it.

Park City Olympians Spread Good Will

Hannah Kearney at the Boston Marathon

When not making celebrity appearances on Park City’s nightlife scene — whether judging cocktail contests or hosting nonprofit events — Park Citizens of the 2010 Olympic team have stayed busy launching good will projects, making national news, and supporting charities.

At least three Park City residents joined more than 200 Team USA athletes in Washington this week to help spark enthusiasm for Earth Day, the fight against childhood obesity, and Habitat for Humanity.

Olympic moguls champion Hannah Kearney joined Michelle Obama at River Terrance Elementary School on Wednesday to teach kids about the importance of exercise and healthy eating as part of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative. Two days earlier, Kearney showed her support to athletes at the Boston Marathon.

Aerial skier and silver medalist Jeret “Speedy” Peterson also had a busy week, appearing on the Today Show in New York in between appearances at the White House.

Joining Speedy on the Today Show was Park City skeleton athlete, Noelle Pikus-Pace, whose fourth-place finish in Vancouver came less than a year after recovering from leg injuries sustained when a bobsled struck her during practice. Pikus-Pace, whose primary charities include the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association, also heavily supports the “Let’s Move” initiative, even joining a viral video effort for YouTube. (See who else is jumping on the Let’s Move band wagon here.) Park Citizens can join the fight against childhood obesity themselves by visiting www.letsmove.gov.

Heavily decorated Olympic freestylist Shannon Bahrke has kept busy with local charity efforts, judging the Park City Cocktail Contest to support the People’s Health Clinic while running her Salt Lake-based Silver Bean Coffee Company with fiance Matt Happe. The independently run roaster sports over 20 specialty coffees representing other winter sports athletes and their charities. The “Speedy” Peterson blend is among their repertoire, benefiting the Special Olympics of Idaho.

Park City Nightlife: Sky Blue’s Eddie Crowned, A Whole New “Buzz,” Breakdancing Downstairs

Eddie Scheckloth's other little-known talent? Being in the right place at the right time.

Sundance flashback: Cocktail King Eddie Scheckloth displays his other hidden talent: matching celebrities.

The weekend finale of the 2010 ski season kicked off with a sweet tradition and ended with mild weather, sunshine, and a Hawley reunion. The fifth annual Park City Cocktail Contest, held Thursday night at Wahso, saw Eddie Scheckloth of Sky Blue at the Sky Lodge crowned king just one night after Sky Lodge founder Bill Shoaf unveiled his new Main Street-centric social news site, Old Town Buzz. Schneckloth, also a talented photographer and karaoke aficionado, won with his Acai Sour in a heated battle among 16 contestants.

Venice, California native Christpher Hawley continued the weekend energy with a crowded performance at Downstairs Friday night in between a set at Green Street in Salt Lake and a closing day performance at The Canyons. Hawley returned to Downstairs Saturday night, where he reunited with Michael Kaplan, owner of the club when it was the famous Mother Urban’s.

“The first time I played in Park City was in this space,” Hawley said.

Park City Info Channel director Lee Kubik also attended the Saturday Set, breakdancing with friends to DJ Bentley’s opener. A bachelorette party, a birthday and a bride-tastic cowgirl hat by Nancy Nichols capped the evening. Neighboring Lindzee O’Michael’s also kept a raucous party going with its end-of-season bash, while Townie drew a crowd upstreet at The Spur.

Live music in Park City will live on despite the end of ski season, as next week brings Bryon Friedman, Salem, and a two-day encore performance by reggae legend Pato Benton to Main Street. See full Music Listings here.

Sarah Jessica Parker Loves Yellow Snow

During a recent trip to Park City, newly mended couple Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick took a family outing to Yellow Snow Ice Cream & Coffee, a specialty start-up in Prospector. Alex, a Yellow Snow employee, noted Parker’s delight in the shop’s signature ice cream.

“She was super stoked on the ice cream,” he said. “She couldn’t get over how good it was.” The A-Listers also stayed a while to play foosball with their son James, 6, to the delight of twin daughters Marion and Tabitha, 9 months.

Parker and Broderick, who stayed and skied in Deer Valley, are no strangers to Park City. Both are Sundance veterans, having each appeared in recent films with 2008’s “Smart People” and “Diminished Capacity.”

Weekend Nightcap: DJ Fashen Entertains, LUNKuR Draws Crowd

Despite a snowy holiday weekend, Main Street saw plenty of action with lighthearted party-goers and even more lighthearted entertainers. DJ Fashen of Los Angeles played in the snow outside Lower Main’s Downstairs club, bantered with the crowd inside, and posed for Dubb Media photographer Teresa DeWilde, who captured the weekend action. Notable attendees at the Saturday Set included Da Click owner Josh Kaufman, Dave Ostrander, Downstairs co-owners Lisa and Mike Herring, Jean-Louis Montecot of the “luscious” Jean-Louis restaurant and his general manager, Regis Perret. See full photo gallery here.

Up the street, six-piece jam band LUNKuR played to a warm reception at The Spur, where unfamiliar faces proved tourists still had a place in the Park City nightlife scene. The Egyptian Theater’s “Stand Up Like an Egyptian” comedy show also unleashed a merry crowd in the earlier nightlife hours.

This weekend brings more live music with the Matt Lewis Band at the Corner Store Christopher Hawley and Stretch Armstrong at Downstairs, Townie at The Spur and Ryan Hiller at The Sidecar.
